A husky team is quieter than you expect and considerably faster. A reindeer sleigh is neither, which is exactly why both belong in the same week. Most kennels sit twenty minutes out of town along the Kemijoki, and the farms are family operations with coffee on the fire and lichen in a paper bag.

The night starts before dinner.
From late November the sun never properly clears the trees, and by mid-afternoon it is dark again. Locals treat those hours as the useful part of the day: a drysuit float in a frozen lake, eighty degrees of sauna and a hole cut in the ice, salmon on a plank beside a fire in a lavvu.
You can stand on the Arctic Circle before lunch.
The Circle crosses the ground at Santa Claus Village, eight kilometres north of the centre, and walking in costs nothing. What you book is the ride, the meeting slot and whatever the operator bundles around it.
Buildings that melt in April.
The snow hotel is cut fresh every December, the ice restaurant serves off a slab of frozen lake, and the glass igloos exist so you can watch the sky without leaving the duvet. None of it survives the spring, which is half the appeal.
The waterfalls freeze where they fall.
Korouoma is a fault-line gorge two hours north-east of Rovaniemi, deep enough that the winter sun never reaches the floor. The falls stop moving in December and stand there thirty metres high and pale blue until April. It is a real walk down in crampons, and there are sausages over a fire at the bottom.

Rovaniemi for the kennels and the Circle. Levi for the fells. Saariselkä for skies with nothing under them. Korouoma for the frozen falls. Ranua when there are children in the party.

Six roads worth the drive.
Lapland distances look absurd on a map and read as nothing on an empty winter road. Ranua is an hour, Korouoma two, Levi two and a half, Saariselkä four if you want a sky with no glow on the horizon at all.

Most people land with three nights and try to book everything into day one. This is the order that works, and it keeps the aurora slot loose so you can move it to the clearest sky.

Collect thermals in the morning, walk the Arctic Circle line at Santa Claus Village through the two hours of blue light, and take the first aurora run that night while you are still on home time.

Huskies while the light is best, a reindeer farm and a short sleigh circuit afterwards, then the sauna and the hole in the lake to undo the cold. Kennels and farms both sit within half an hour of town.

Give the last full day to the drive north-east, the walk into the gorge and the frozen falls at the bottom. Hot food over a fire, back in Rovaniemi by early evening with time for one more aurora attempt.
